Ginger Creates :: Valentine's Day Love

"The best thing to hold onto in life is each other." - Audrey Hepburn

I love Valentine's day. A lot.

You might be wondering why?...Am I right? I know that many people label it a Hallmark holiday created for people to spend money, and while I understand that, I just don't care. For me, V-Day is a day to show love and gratitude for the special people in your life. In my opinion, you should show love and gratitude everyday, but some times that just doesn't happen. Life gets in the way. And it is understandable. A holiday such as Valentine's day gives you the opportunity to really showcase your feelings towards another. It's much like celebrating your birthday. Shouldn't people spoil and dote upon you all year long? Of course. But your loved ones extra spoil you on your special day. It's all the same.

My husband and I (well, I take charge on this) send Valentine's day cards every year in lieu of sending Christmas/New Year's/Holiday cards. We do this for the very reason that we want to spread love on Valentine's day. Not that we don't wish everyone a Merry Christmas, etc., but we prefer our cards to be sent in February. It is a little special surprise that isn't always expected. I used to love celebrating V-Day at school. Baked goodies, candy hearts, sharing those cute cards with your classmates, the crafts, all of it. So fun.

With that being said, I am feeling in the spirit. I have been a little crafty fantastic this season with lots of ideas floating around in my mind, one in which being a mailbox to collect cute little mailings. Below is an up-cycled canister that used to be filled with store bought dog treats. This finished mail holder that I easily made (pictured below) is decked out for V-Day (in effort to inspire you), but really, it will be used all year long. This piece will be the perfect box to leave our dreaded bills that need to be paid. FUN. Right?

Oh, and I should mention, this project costed me under $5. The price is certainly right.

Here's how I did it...

I am a bit of a hoarder I guess. I find cute things that could be anything from leftover packaging, old material, elements of gifts given to us, etc. and I save them all in my well organized craft closet... because you just never know when you might need 'em. I LOVE, let me repeat LOVE giving gifts. I prefer to give gifts than to receive for the most part. I take pride in selecting the right present and then wrapping it just right. So, when I saw this leftover tin box, I knew I would be able to either use it for gifting OR as a handy container for around the house.

The Original Treat Box + Supplies
I chose blue spray paint because it matches my house perfectly. (Note: Before you paint, make sure the surface of whatever you are painting is clean.)

Side note: The chalk paint was going to be used for lettering on the box, but I changed my mind...you will see. :)

My "paint booth"

I try to cover my paint area well and it is important to use a well-ventilated area so the fumes can escape. You will notice that there is a white plate in my paint box, that is for a piece for a different craft which will be shared at a later date. :)

Once your paint area is set up, then paint away. Follow the directions on the paint can to make sure you have an even color.

After the paint is dry, you are ready to decorate your box! Here are a few ideas:

1. You can paint lettering on it, or really whatever you want. A design maybe?
2. You can use decal stickers
3. Add some burlap and glue it with a hot glue gun
4. Bedazzle it with gems

...and the options are limitless

Here's what mine looks like:

A close up:
I used cork lettering and glued the hearts down for extra safety

There are many possible uses for a canister like this. Some could be:

1. Cookie container
2. Gift box
3. Storage for craft supplies
4. Dry food storage
5. Cosmetics

....you decide!

Let me know how yours turns out. Share your end results below! I would love to hear about them. :)

HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!
